The Red Labs now has a more sensitive test for Lyme disease called Phelix Phage Borrelia. The principle of the test is based on the detection of bacteriophages specific to Borrelia that can be detected with higher sensibility than Borrelia itself by PCR. There is no bacteriophages in the body unless Borrelia is present, bacteriophages outnumber Borrelia in copy number and are more readily accessible from samples as they do not hide deep into the tissues as Borrelia can do. It is thought that this test will provide a higher level of detection (sensibility) whilst maintaining the high level of specificity of the test (true positive).
